Royalty in the Forest

by Richard Reeves, Librarian, Christopher Tower Reference Library

The power to create a forest is vested in the Crown and, as such, royalty has played a key role in the history of the New Forest. This talk links with the current special exhibition and examines the links between those of blue blood who visited or left their mark on the Forest we see today, following royal connections in the area from the foundation myths of Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms to Queen Elizabeth's visit in 1979.

'An Elementary Connection'

by Dr Roger Straughan PhD

This illustrated talk will explore the fascinating links between the life and writings of the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the New Forest in general and Minstead and the Lyndhurst area in particular.  The speaker, Dr Roger Straughan, is an author and lecturer with a long-standing interest in Conan Doyle, sharing with him a love of the Forest - together with an enthusiasm for cricket and psychical research, which both form part of the story to be unfolded.  His latest book is A Study in Survival: Conan Doyle Solves the Final Problem.
